INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOCAL WAVE ORGANISORS
about how to create a WAVE in your own city
WHAT IS A WAVE?
WAVE originally means World Advanced Vehicle Expedition, but it could also mean Wonderful World Alternative Event…
WAVE also means symbolically, that with every drop we generate WAVEs. With every event we generate an impact, we make things move. Ultimately, we want to move the world. For a greener and better future.
WAVE also means that we are a WAVE of people. A WAVE which is more powerful than the heat waves and the waves of rising Sea levels. Together, we are strong. We are a WAVE that can stop global warming.
The WAVE is an annual event. In 2016, for the first time, it will happen globally. With many little WAVEs in 100 coastal cities in this world.
WHO CAN SET UP A WAVE AND BE A PARTNER?
Anyone who helps to organize a WAVE can be a partner. This can be for example international schools, local schools, local environmental organisations, activists, local electric vehicle associations, electric vehicle owners, individuals, companies, our Ambassadors etc. The WAVE is a people’s movement, so anyone can be part of it!
HOW CAN I ORGANIZE A LOCAL WAVE?
Best you contact us or our Ambassadors first by email, so we can connect you with our local partners that we may already have. Let’s then get the schools on board, and then let’s find the clean vehicles.
HOW CAN THE WAVE HQ IN SWITZERLAND HELP?
We can help to connect you with other partners in your area, we can put your logo on our website and we will publish your event on our social media channels, if you provide enough information (text, photographs, videos). Our Ambassadors can also give you all kinds of advise how to make a WAVE, best by email or by skype.
HOW CAN THE WAVE HQ NOT HELP?
We can not help with any finances, except the shipping of the parcel from poorer countries. Please let us know well in advance if you need our help with this, so we have enough time to arrange things.
WHEN WILL THE WAVE TAKE PLACE IN MY CITY?
The most important thing: the cards must arrive in Bremerhaven until 7 June 2016. That’s why the different WAVEs take place in different times: The PACIFIC WAVE will take place in February and March (this gives enough time for the ships to arrive from the different places like Singapore, Lima or Tuvalu) to Bremerhaven. The INDIAN OCEAN WAVE will take place in the first half of March (this leaves enough time for ships to arrive from Dubai, Durban or Mumbai), the ATLANTIC WAVE in the second half of March, the MEDITERRANEAN WAVE in April and the North Sea WAVE at the beginning of May. The local partners should check with the local post office how much time the postal services take, before the exact date is defined.
WHO WILL SET THE EXACT DATE?
The different partners will set the date together, and then please email this date to the HQ so we can put in on the website.
WHAT IS NEEDED FOR A WAVE?
All we need are local schools who participate. The aim should be to reach 10’000 pupils per city, so 100 cities x 10’000 pupils = 1 Million pupils. But even if only 200 pupils or less participate in a city, it’s already a WAVE! It's also nice to have (if available) at least one electric vehicle or bicycle that can visit the schools , and local activists who can coordinate everything and even visit the schools for teaching about global warming (if they are available).
WHAT SCHOOLS CAN PARTICIPATE?
Any school is most welcome to join the WAVE and to participate. We recommennd that the pupils have an age of above 10 years, but the schools are free to decide themselves which classes they want to involve and which not.
HOW DO I CONTACT THE SCHOOLS?
The best thing is if you contact the international schools first. They all speak English. You can call them by skype or just send them an email. A list of international schools you can find here:
WHAT DO THE SCHOOLS HAVE TO DO?
All the pupils are asked to commit to reduce their own carbon footprint. For their better understanding, we provide teachning resources , and we can even send climate activists to schools who have enough experience to teach children about global warming. Most of our activists have already done that several times.
We will even send the schools an electric vehicle or bicycles (if available), and please give them a warm welcome with as many pupils as possible! In the internet the schools can follow the WAVE and find their own cards laid-out in Geneva on an aerial photograph. What the schools need is a piece of paper (8 x 11 cm) for each pupil and some big sheet of paper (size A0) to stick their cards on it. This whole project can be done in a lesson of 45 minutes. how to produce a card you can see here.
WHAT ELSE DO THE LOCAL PARTNERS HAVE TO DO?
All partners are invited to produce a small video or send some video sequences to the WAVE, so we can put it all on facebook and other children all over the world can see what happened in other cities and what other schools are doing.
HOW SHOULD THE WAVE PROGRAMME LOOK LIKE?
Each WAVE is different. Some WAVEs take one day or even less, some WAVEs may take several days. The electric vehicle(s) should start early in the morning and visit one school after another. Schools are asked to give the electric vehicle a warm welcome with as many pupils as possible! Count enough time for traffic and a stop of at least 30 minutes per school. This leaves enough time to take a picture with all cards laid-out, with the pupils and the electric vehicle(s). Please send the picture to your Ambassador and the WAVE HQ, so we can put it on our facebook page. At the last stop (it can be a school or a place in the city center) all cards should be laid-out and the press should be invited. Imagine 200 pupils and 20 square meters of comittments and some electric cars, what a sign for a better world!
HOW WILL THE PRESS EVENT BE ORGANIZED?
A Press article will be delivered by the WAVE to all partners. The partners just have to fill out the details of their event and send it to the local press. The WAVE HQ may also help with organizing the local press.
WHICH CITIES CAN PARTICIPATE?
If, for example, a WAVE takes place in Brisbane, then also villages around Brisbane can participate, as long as those villages geographically belong to the Brisbane area and as long as they can be reached by an electric car. In the case of the Brisbane WAVE for example, also Byron Bay will participate, even though Byron Bay is 150 km away. So Byron Bay will not be a separate WAVE, it will be part of the Brisbane WAVE.
CAN SCHOOLS PARTCIPATE, WHICH ARE NOT AT THE COAST?
Yes, they can. The only condition: The comittment cards have to reach the nearest port city in an environmentally friendly way by electric vehicle or bicycles.
WHO WILL SEND OUT THE MAIL, AND HOW?
In every city, one partner will be responsible for that. It can be the EV people, a school or an organisation or a private person. Post has to be sent by ship, that is called “surface mail”. Air Mail should not be used, as we don’t want to use polluting aircraft.
WHO WILL PAY FOR THE POST?
A parcel will cost around 20 – 200 USD, and the surface mail should normally be payed by one of the local partners – in the rich countries. In the poorer countries the WAVE HQ may help by connecting schools in poorer countries with schools in Continental Europe.
IS THERE A CHECKLIST TO ORGANIZE A WAVE?
Here we go:
